• My Son Is Allergic To Wheat

I’m allergic to bananas. It’s not a big deal most of the time. Since we live in the South, where banana pudding is a food group, I often hear “You poor thing! You can’t eat banana pudding? That’s awful!” The truth is, I don’t know what it tastes like. I can smell the sweetness of bananas. They smell delicious. I’ve had a few artificially banana flavored candies, so I can sort of guess at the taste, but I haven’t eaten them. There have been a few accidental exposures, but for the most part, I don’t know what I’m missing, so it’s pointless to feel sorry for me because I can’t have a scoop of banana pudding.

My son is allergic to wheat. Soon, when he is older, he will need to be tested for Celiac Disease, an auto immune disorder that causes the body not to be able to process wheat. For now though, it’s just listed as an allergy on his charts and we adhere to a gluten free diet. People always want to give little kids treats and snacks. Often we have to turn them down and explain his allergy. Then it happens… they start to feel sorry for him. “Poor kid, he can’t have anything! He can’t eat cookies or cake or goldfish crackers!” I’ll admit that wheat is in a lot of things, but there are plenty of alternatives and plenty of things it’s not in. For instance, he loves fresh fruit and vegetables and they’re naturally wheat free!

Yes, my son’s allergy is different than mine. Wheat is used a whole lot more than bananas. Yes, there are times when my son gets upset about his allergy, but it’s not really that he can’t have that particular cookie…

He gets upset when everyone else’s kid is getting a cookie and there’s no alternative for him. He gets upset when he doesn’t understand why he cannot have a cookie at all, not that he can’t have that particular cookie. Sorry Grandma, he’s two so he doesn’t care that he can’t have your famous chocolate chip cookies. He just cares that there are no cookies he’s allowed to have.
