• Teenagers Aren’t What They Used To Be

Not so different as it is now, even 70 years ago.  The devices they use to communicate has evolved, but the subject matter of their discussions remains the same.

Popular Music.  Just listen to the radio, if you can stand it.  Although the Hip-Hop/Rap culture is more prevalent than it used to be, teenagers who hang together tend to listen to and talk about the same kind of music.

    Opposite Sex.   Enough said.

Sex.  See above.  Although I am relieved to say more teens practice safe sex.

Grades.  Even if the graduation rate has dropped, more kids are focused on their end game – higher grades and higher ranking in the graduation lineup.

Drinking.  It is a teenager’s job to push the envelope and while drinking is still part of the teenage culture, less teens consider driving while under the influence.

Smoking.  Again, pushing the envelope, but now smoking cigarettes is so last year.  Now it’s vapor cigarettes.

Drugs.  With the legalization of marijuana in many states, marijuana usage has risen.

Friday Night Football.  This is still the place to see and be seen on a Friday night in a normal American High School.  Once winter hits, the venue changes to basketball, with a chance to spend more time with friends.

Parents.  Your folks were annoying then, and you are annoying now.  At least you can say that teens are consistent, even if it is in thinking that their parents are oh, so lame.

Kind of nice to see that some things don’t change.  Much.
