• My Life in the Twittersphere

Health/Support: CaringBridge, DailyStrength and PatientsLikeMe connect individuals or their healthcare providers (including family, friends) with health issues, such as cancer.

General: The more popular ones, like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and the lesser known ones: Bebo (13 & up); Blauk (13 & up) – although this sounds like a rumor mill/bullying website to me; ClusterFlunk – despite it’s questionable name, it allows students to share with other students; Eons.com – for 40 & over crowd; GetGlue – for entertainment; GovLoop – for, you guessed it, people who work in government; Habbo – for teens; MouthShut – for consumers to post reviews; ReverbNation – for musicians and bands.

Dating: Even though these sites get a bad rap, many people have met, dated and/or married after meeting on these sites.  I met my boyfriend on one of them myself.  But I had never heard of Faces.com, Goodwizz (again, I question the name), Makeoutclub (wonder what members are on there for…..not!) and Meetin.

Blogging: There are so many of these types of sites out there, that it is difficult to determine which ones are good and which you could probably pass by: Blogster, DailyBooth (photo-blogging), Fuelmyblog, My Opera and OpenDiary are just a handful of examples.

Location, location, location:  Some sites are dedicated to a particular area of the world: aSmallWorld (European jet-set site), Biip.no (Norwegian), Cloob (Iran), CyWorld (S. Korea) and DontStayIn (based in the UK, although I like the sound of this site).

There is a vast array of social media sites that cater to a wide variety of people.  As they say, if you can think of it, there’s probably an app for that.
